Loyalty program best practices: a café example

27 Jul 2026
Meet The Daily Cup, a neighbourhood café that wants two things at once: get regulars coming in more often, and nudge customers to spend a little more when they do visit. Instead of forcing a trade-off, The Daily Cup runs two Stamp Card Promotions side by side under a single Loyalty Program.
The key idea: a single qualifying payment can count toward more than one Promotion at the same time. By setting the two Stamp Cards at different minimum-spend thresholds, most small purchases advance only the everyday card, while a larger order advances both cards from one payment. At no extra cost to the customer. Here's how The Daily Cup sets it up on Payap.
Step 1: Create the Loyalty Program
The Daily Cup creates a Loyalty Program named "The Daily Cup Lover", with a short description: "Join to unlock exclusive Challenges and earn Rewards.”
This is the first thing customers see when they discover The Daily Cup on the Payap app.

Step 2: Set Up Rewards (Points)
The Daily Cup configures their Points card with the name "Daily Beans".

Step 3: Create the Promotions (Stamp Cards)
The Daily Cup creates two Stamp Card Promotions. They are deliberately set at different minimum-spend thresholds so the cards do different jobs.
Promotion 1: "Coffee Club" — the everyday frequency card
A low-threshold, always-on card that rewards regular visits.
Minimum spend to earn stamp: $10.00
Number of stamps: 6 stamps
Reward: 300 Points ($3.00 NZD)
Repeatable: Enabled, so loyal customers automatically receive a fresh card and keep earning after each completed one
Period: Disabled, the card starts immediately on publishing and has no end date, providing a permanent baseline incentive
Limit Rewards: Disabled, no cap, so every customer who completes the card receives their Reward

Promotion 2: "Winter Warmer Feast" — the limited-time higher-spend card
A high-threshold, time-boxed card that encourages bigger orders during the winter season.
Minimum spend to earn stamp: $20.00
Number of stamps: 10 stamps
Reward: 1,000 Points ($10.00 NZD)
Repeatable: Disabled, so each customer completes a single card during the campaign
Period: Running from 1 July 2026 to 30 September 2026, across the three winter months, to create seasonal urgency
Limit Rewards: 150, to manage the Reward budget for the campaign
If all 150 Rewards are claimed:
MINIMUM TOTAL REVENUE | 150 × $160.00 | $24,000.00 |
|---|---|---|
Total Rewards cost | 150 × $10.00 | $1,500.00 |
Net revenue (minimum estimate) | $30,000 - $1,500 | $28,500.00 |
Rewards as % of revenue | $1,500 / $24,000 | 5.26% |
With a $20 minimum per stamp and a capped supply of 150 Rewards, this seasonal campaign generates at least $30,000 in revenue at a controlled cost of 5.26%, with the budget firmly capped.
Why run both at the same time?
The two thresholds make the cards complementary rather than redundant:
A purchase of $10–$19.99 meets Coffee Club's threshold but not Winter Warmer Feast's, so it stamps Coffee Club only. Everyday small orders keep feeding the frequency card.
A purchase of $20.00 or more meets both thresholds, so a single payment stamps both cards at once. The customer pays nothing extra but advances toward two Rewards — this is where the dual-card setup creates leverage.
The result: Coffee Club drives how often customers come in, while Winter Warmer Feast lifts how much they spend per visit during the campaign — and the limited-time card creates seasonal urgency while the always-on card keeps the baseline running after winter ends.
Note: When two Promotions run together, a single qualifying payment may automatically count toward both. Because the thresholds are staggered ($10 vs $20), only larger orders trigger both cards, so the combined Reward cost stays well below double.
Step 4: Review and Publish
Before going live, The Daily Cup carefully reviews every detail of both Promotions — the names, minimum spend, stamp targets, Reward amounts, and settings such as Period and Total Rewards Available — and checks how the staggered thresholds interact.
Note: Once published, the Loyalty Program and its Promotions cannot be modified, so The Daily Cup takes extra care to confirm all details beforehand.

Step 5: Monitor the Results
Once live, The Daily Cup tracks performance directly in the Business Portal.
Under the Loyalty tab, they can view overall program data, including how many customers have joined The Daily Cup Rewards. Under the Promotions tab, they monitor each Stamp Card separately — watching Coffee Club's repeat-visit activity and tracking Winter Warmer Feast's progress toward its 150-Reward supply limit.
Running the two cards in parallel also lets The Daily Cup compare which Promotion drives more engagement, giving them solid data to design their next campaign with confidence.
